Offshore Venice LA Fishing Report 04-29-2014

Took a few days off for easter but got back at it the end of last week. Started off on thursday by catching some nice baits and rolled out. first rig we stopped at we put a 100 pounder in the boat on a hardtail. We had a couple other nibbles on livies there but no hookups so out the chum went. Picked up two on chum pretty quickly and they shut off.
Headed a little farther out and put another one i the box on live bait and missed another one. Put the chum out again and it took a drift or two but we got them going and put 5 more in the box before we headed to the house.
Day two we got some live bait again but nothing wanted to eat it today. Put one small one in the box at our first stop with nothing else to show for it. Headed south to our spot from the first day but it was a little slower there as we picked up three more. Decided to keep on going and ended up about 60 miles out. Didnt see much life there but we stuck with it and nailed a bigeye on an anteater jig. Then we picked up one on a frenzy popper while blind casting.
Only got the tuna going on one drift and we doubled up and put them in the boat before the action died off
Called it a day around 315 with 8 tuna in the box.
Day three was the best of the bunch. It was still slick calm but we had a little more current today and it showed. Got two at the first spot and missed one on chunk and rolled out to the more consistent spot and it was on today. Every drift we hooked at least one and some we hooked 4-5 fish. Called it a day at one with 13 yf in the box. All the fish bit red meat with some on 80 pound flouro and some on 60 pound flouro.
Day 4 was rough and we pulled it back quite a bit closer then we had been going and tried our best to make it happen. We got a couple undersized yellowfin on lures and one decent fish on a chunk but that was it. So we broke out the anteater jigs and went to shallower water. Picked up a couple blacks on jigs and then got a 6 man limit of ajs. Scamp bite was a little slow but we did put three in the boat.
Capt mike was also putting a hurting on the fish and picked up plenty of 60-80 pound yf. the best part is the fish are spread out and we were never within 20 miles of each other. Its nice when everyone can spread out and get fish.

Dude, I gotta make the trip from San Antonio to fish with you sometime. Until then I appreciate your posts and pics. It is nice to see that there are guys out there living large and in charge while I am working to fund a Social Security plan that I may never see.
